Thursday - BBQ Fest Recap

So yeah, one more night of BBQ Fest under my belt. How did it go down? Well I worked late and raced home. I was going to go to the gym, but I got a muffaletta from McAllister’s instead. I ate that and as I was about to get into the shower, the Travel Channel had show called “Food Wars: Barbecue”. So I watched that. I started it just under halfway through. They talked about Texas BBQ. Then they went to Kansas City. Apparently I had missed the origins of BBQ and the segments on Memphis and North Carolina.

They ended the program with a “Who’s the Best” segment. They got 14 cowboys and cowgirls from some valley in California to taste unnamed BBQ from each region. I believe the scores were as follows:
North Carolina 17 points
Kansas City 28 points
Texas 30 points
MEMPHIS 45 POINTS

The most anywhere could get was a perfect 70 points. Hold on a second while we give ourselves a regional pat on the back.

So why did I post that? To brag, plus it is a decent segway into the recap of BBQ Fest. I caught a cab downtown despite my unhappy stomach. I don’t know what was wrong with it, but I soon realized it wanted beer. So I got to the first tent right at sunrise and took care of my stomach’s serious needs.

I think I visited about 7 tents last night. Last night was mostly about getting my bearings around the place as many teams have moved from their spots last year. I had fun. Here are the only two pics from last night. Oh yeah, I went with the novelty Tshirt just for the effect. I couldn’t walk past 20 people without someone reading my shirt or making a comment. There were a few dumbasses who wanted to talk smack, but I always ignore those losers. I went to one tent to find my buddy “The FD”. There was this girl in there staring me down. She came across the tent and said “I love your shirt. You don’t remember me do you?” She couldn’t tell me where I met her or when. She is married to the older brother of a guy I went to high school with. Then she proceeded to argue with me that the guy I remember is too young and I must know his older brother/her husband. Then she runs off. Very odd. But I did get my pic with her. I ran into one of my sister’s friends who was home from college. She tried to be all “Miss Cool College Freshman”. So I made her take a pic with me as punishment for having an attitude.

Oh yeah, I got my pic with Shawna from Newby’s but it was on someone else’s camera. I’ll post it when I get a copy.

When I was leaving I caught a pic of this. I am glad I missed their tent.

I’ll be back tonight with a vengeance. I'll probably skip the whole novelty Tshirt idea this time.

Okay, I'm officially pumped for my first ever foray into the world of BBQ Fest tonight. I hope we eventually run into ya!

MG - I recommend the Jager Bomb. You can't taste the Jager for all the Red Bull. And I recommend taking Jager Bombs at a bar instead of a restaurant. You don't need to give little kids anymore bad ideas.

Kat - Just have RD text me. That's the best way to reach me because I can't hear shit on the phone when I'm in a booth.

let me clarify...
I do my drinking (anything other than the usual 2-3 margaritas, which I don't really count) on the "bar side" of the restaurant...
never let it be said that I taught the kiddies anything bad ;)
